New deadline is 11/16/2023 - more time to file and pay taxes due

In an unprecedented last minute move, the IRS has just announced an additional disaster relief extension from today, October 16, 2023 to November 16, 2023.  This applies to certain California storm victims.

According to the IRS announcement, "As long as their address of record is in a disaster-area locality, individual and business taxpayers automatically get the extra time, without having to ask for it. The current list of eligible localities and eligible relief is available on the disaster relief page on IRS.gov."

This extension also provides additional time for eligible taxpayers to make 2022 contributions to IRAs and health savings accounts.

California Follows Federal Extension

At 6 pm on October 16, 2023, the California Franchise Tax Board announced an extension of their filing and payment deadlines to November 16, 2023 for those in affected California counties.

To take advantage of the extended filing date, taxpayers in affected counties are advised to do the following on their California return:

  • Write the name of the disaster (for example, California winter storms) in blue or black ink at the top of their tax return to alert FTB.
  • If taxpayers are filing electronically, they should follow the software instructions to enter disaster information.
  • If an affected taxpayer receives a late filing or late payment penalty notice related to the postponement period, the taxpayer should call the number on the notice to have the penalty abated.
